Sahib al-Amr (a.s.) travels among people, walks in the market, but they do not recognize him until God gives him permission to introduce himself.
There are many hadiths about the residence of Imam Asr (AS); Some point to the place and some keep it silent to save their lives.
Among the various issues that arise around Mahdism, the place and place of life of the Prophet is of great importance. By examining the traditions that exist in this field, we find that these traditions are divided into three categories:
1. Some of them do not specify a specific place and introduce the location of the Prophet in deserts and mountains. Among them, Hazrat Mahdi (AS) says to Mahziyar’s son: Mahziar’s son! My father, Imam Hasan (a.s.) made a pact with me… and ordered me to choose hard mountains and dry and remote lands for my residence. (1) This part of the hadiths shows that the Holy Prophet is far away from people’s reach and lives with difficulty and no one knows where he lives.
2. Some hadiths name a specific area as the place of residence of that Prophet and also determine its boundaries:
a. Medina and its surroundings: Abi Basir says that I heard from Imam Baqir (AS) that he said: Sahib al-Zaman is seclusion and absence in which he is as strong as the thirty people who are with him and remove fear and loneliness from him, and Medina is a good place. (2)
There is another narration that mentions the place of Hazrat as Mount Razavi, around Madinah. The narrator says: We left Madinah with Imam Sadiq (a.s.), when we reached the spirits around Madinah, he fixed his gaze on a mountain and continued for some time… and said: This mountain is called “Razavi”. Well, it is a refuge for those who fear Imam Zaman (A.S.) in minor and major absences. (3)
b. Mecca and its surroundings: Some narrations are used that the Holy Prophet lives in a place called Dhi Towi around Mecca and will rise from there along with his companions. Imam Baqir (a.s.) said: Imam Zaman (a.s.) is absent in some valleys and pointed to the region of Dhi Towi. (4) In the continuation of this narration and other narrations, the same area is also mentioned as the place of appearance and departure of the Holy Prophet and the gathering center of his companions and friends. (5)
3. The third category is news that, like the first category, does not mention a specific position, but mentions him as a person who mingles with people and lives anonymously.
Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says: Sahib al-Amr (a.s.) travels among people, walks in the market, but they do not recognize him until God gives him permission to introduce himself… (6)
There is no conflict between these three categories of narrations. Naming a specific place can be combined with living anonymously. Choosing unattainable mountains and places in times of need is also natural and in accordance with the principle of taqiyyah. (7)
