Always when I went to the old people’s home in Kahrizak, I saw nothing but long and wide corridors, disabled people and neatly arranged beds, but this time I found a place in a corner of the same nursing home where the residents call it a piece of They call it heaven. A residential town with houses of the same shape where 47 disabled couples have been living there for years and spend their lives together in the shade of empathy and intimacy.
Sometimes we people, at the peak of benefiting from physical health, do not have the motivation to walk the smooth path of our life, we aimlessly move here and there and complain about everything, but here everything has a different color and smell. The people of this land, at the height of their disability, water their yards with love and grow geraniums behind the window with the song of hope. Everything has a different color and smell here…
Me, Ahmad and Fatima…
Ahmed is 25 years old and so is Fatima. Ahmed doesn’t have two hands and Fatemeh has two legs, Ahmed waters the yard with the hands he doesn’t have, and Fatemeh cooks for her husband in a wheelchair, food seasoned with love. Ahmed paints, is a master in mosaics, and is unique in performing theater and singing. Fatima is the same. He is also an artist and has artistic taste.
With Fatima all I have something
Ahmed knows from his childhood and parents that he has never met, being born with a disability is the only thing. “My parents left me in welfare, my childhood did not even pass in a nursery school. From the very beginning, I understood that I have no one but God. But now, with Fatima, I have everything.”
Ahmed has no hands, but his wedding ring is hung on his neck by a chain to strengthen his bond with his wife. He loves his wife. says: “Four years ago, on an autumn morning, when I was going to class, I saw Fatima sitting on a wheelchair in the nursing home. His dignity and weight attracted my attention, that’s why I proposed to him by one of my friends.
But what did Fatima see in Ahmed that made her say yes to his proposal? “When I saw his manly pride, I couldn’t refuse, even now I’m happy that I’m living comfortably with my husband and with the facilities that Kehrizak Hospital has provided for us.”
Ahmed considers his whole life full of hope, especially since he made a marriage vow with Fatima. And being this means hope.”
We never fight at home
“We never fight at home, most of the housework is with Ahmed Agha. He does everything well, even vacuums better than me.”
Disability is not a limitation
Ahmed is not at all upset that he is disabled, he says: “By the way, I am very happy. I feel that I am white before God. God loves me very much. It is impossible for me to ask him for anything and not give him. When I know that God exists and I have refuge It’s me, why shouldn’t I hope? Everyone says “God”, but I believe that it is enough to know yourself and take a deep breath. Then you will easily feel the presence of God.”
Fatima also confirms her husband’s statements. “Disability may be difficult, but it is not a limitation, in a shared life, many of these limitations are not visible, and it is an opportunity for new experiences for both of us.”
This is God’s land; We have everything
Ahmed likes where he lives and being with Fatima. “I have a good feeling that this is God’s land. Fatima doesn’t want anything more, we have everything here, we are a big family. Everyone is very happy.
