Organization  The United Nations announced that famine is increasing in the Horn of Africa, especially in Somalia  Within the next four to six weeks, the entire southern region  Includes Somalia .

This is despite the fact that a meeting was supposed to be held this week with the efforts of the United Nations to donate aid to the Horn of Africa and eradicate famine in it.  That’s an excuse  The meeting was postponed for another two weeks because there was no proper notification about it .

In this regard, the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees described the drought and famine in Somalia as the “worst humanitarian disaster” in the world and called for the help of the international community to the residents of the crisis-hit areas .

An expert on Somali issues reported a humanitarian disaster in which Somali mothers leave their children on the side of the road due to famine and dry milk..

“Mohamed Abdurrahman, an expert on Somali political issues, called the current famine and drought in Somalia, which has caused the death of several thousand children, a rare drought in this country and said: The history of Somalia has rarely seen a drought like this one, and only in 1990 did it experience similar events .

* Somalia’s current drought is similar to the 1990 famine

He stated that a large number of Somali citizens, especially from the south of the country, died in 1990 due to drought, and added: In the last wave of famine, which was not well managed by the then government, the country was on the verge of complete destruction, and after two decades, another wave of drought has engulfed the country .

The reason for the slowness in providing aid to the famine victims of Somalia

Abdurrahman considered the impassability of Somalia’s regions and the presence of some armed groups as the reason for the delay in sending humanitarian aid to the famine-stricken people of Somalia and said: Right now, humanitarian aid is reaching some of the IDP camps, but this amount of aid is not enough .
He stated that humanitarian aid does not reach the areas under the control of the armed youth movement of this country. He emphasized the humanitarian aid of some international organizations to other regions of Somalia and considered it normal that the humanitarian aid does not reach the hard-to-reach areas..

The areas under the control of the Somali Youth Movement have not asked for help

This expert on Somali political issues has stated that the areas under the control of the Somali armed youth movement have not requested any assistance so far. said: Some countries of the world have sent aid to the famine-stricken people of this country, but how to send and distribute this aid is more important. Because the armed youth group does not allow these aid to enter the areas under their control .

The scourge of hunger and cold has accelerated the death rate in Somalia

He described the current conditions of the famine-stricken areas of Somalia as painful and stated that many people have sought refuge in refugee camps due to hunger because they have no food to feed them. He announced the decrease in temperature in Somalia and added: A severe drop in temperature in some areas caused an increase in mortality .

Somali children left on the side of the road waiting to die

Abdul Rahman confirmed the news that some Somali women leave their children on the side of the road to die of starvation and added: I have seen such painful events with my own eyes because the women have no food to feed those children. Women’s milk has completely dried up due to hunger, such incidents make every person’s heart hurt .

Appreciation of the aid of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the famine victims of Somalia

With appreciation from the Supreme Leader who has donated 200 million riyals to the famine victims of Somalia; He invited other Islamic leaders to take such steps and added: When we hear such news from the media, we are very happy and the people and government of Somalia thank those who help their country .
Abdulrahman called the current situation of Somalia disastrous due to famine and armed conflict and said: “Hundreds of thousands of displaced people are waiting for the arrival of humanitarian aid from the international nations, especially that we are in the holy month of Ramadan . “

Despite sending international aid to the famine-stricken regions of Somalia, the situation in this country is still critical. The spokesperson of the United Nations World Food Program in Berlin says that although the possibility of providing aid has been implemented to some extent, access to refugees is still considered a very serious problem .

According to Katarina Weltke, nearly 2.5 million Somalis are far from any possibility of receiving aid.. The United Nations has declared three more regions in the south of Somalia as famine-stricken areas, and thus the number of famine-stricken areas in this country has reached five..

Negotiations with al-Shabaab extremists and other armed groups in Somalia to obtain permission to enter the areas under the control of these groups and to provide aid to the famine victims are still ongoing. The spokesperson of the United Nations World Food Program described the recent military attacks by the African Union against al-Shabaab and other armed groups in recent days as “problematic” and stated that these attacks have not helped to improve the situation .

Experts estimate that the situation in Somalia will worsen in the coming weeks. In recent days, several aid planes from the United Nations have flown to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, to deliver food packages enriched with vitamins and minerals for children under the age of five to local aid workers .

There is a concern among aid workers that the food packages that the children take with them to their camps will be consumed by all members of the family who did not receive aid. Therefore, the aid workers have requested to send family food packages so that all family members can have something to eat .

Warning of another crisis

In order to fight famine in the Horn of Africa, the United Nations has called for the formation of strategic “security networks” and more investment by African governments and international organizations in food storage and water supply management, so that during the outbreak of famine, food needs can be met .

According to the statistics of the US government in the last three months, more than 29 thousand children under the age of five have died due to hunger. The United Nations also estimates that about 3.2 million people in Somalia are in need of “urgent” aid, of which 400,000 Somalis live in areas under the control of al-Shabaab forces..

Meanwhile, two thousand Somalis seek refuge in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya every day.
