Research circles and American media believe that Washington has no substitute for the Yemeni dictator, and yet, because of supporting Ali Abdullah Saleh, it increases the anger and hatred of the Yemeni people against the White House.
The Institute of Strategic Studies affiliated with the American War University emphasized in an independent study about Yemen: America has no substitute for Saleh’s regime. Washington should not cause the Americanization of conflicts in Yemen and should refrain from sending troops. We also need to understand that we have no serious options for the Saleh regime to deal with the threats in the south of the Arabian Peninsula.
At the same time, the Washington Post newspaper wrote, referring to the dual behavior of the United States regarding developments in the Middle East region: Anger and despair towards the Obama administration activists Political and opposition leaders in Yemen are intensifying. Perhaps more than anywhere else, the Yemen crisis highlights the Obama administration’s problem in dealing with the ongoing insurgencies across the Middle East and North Africa and their potential consequences. On the one hand, Yemeni political activists are struggling to achieve the democratic values that Obama strongly emphasized in his speech in Cairo in June 2009. On the other hand, Saleh is a key ally of the United States in a country that poses the greatest security threat to the United States after Afghanistan and Pakistan.
This newspaper added: The US State Department has not publicly called for a change in the Yemeni regime, but American officials privately confirm that Saleh is no longer capable of governing in Yemen. Last month, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the US government needs Saleh, adding that the US enjoys “counter-terrorism cooperation” with Saleh and the Yemeni security forces. He added that “if the government falls or is replaced by a much weaker government”, then the United States will face “more challenges outside of Yemen”.
