The Resistance Axis or Resistance Front is a title used to refer to a regional coalition, including government and non-government forces, mainly Shia, operating in Iran, Syria (during the Hafez and Bashar al-Assad eras), Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, and Palestine.
The goals of the Resistance Axis are considered to be fighting the Israeli occupation and defending the freedom of Palestine, confronting the influence of the West, especially the United States, in the West Asia region, fighting authoritarian governments, and preventing the actions of Takfiri groups such as ISIS.
The formation of the Resistance Axis is considered to be the result of the development of values stemming from the Islamic Revolution of Iran and as a result of the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran for anti-authoritarian and anti-colonial movements. The Axis of Resistance or Resistance Front is considered a regional geopolitical coalition (military and political alliance) consisting of several state actors (Iran and Syria during the Hafez and Bashar al-Assad regimes) and a number of non-state actors (Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement)
which, of course, is said to be led by the Islamic Republic of Iran. This coalition is considered the result of historical events that were formed in the late 20th and early 21st centuries in the face of the actions of the Zionist regime in Palestine and Lebanon, the expansion of ISIS influence in Syria and Iraq, and the dominance of the United States of America over the Middle East. A common regional identity around shared social, religious, and cultural values and norms, as well as being influenced by the discourse of political Islam, have been considered the main characteristics of the axis of resistance, which has united the members of this axis.
One of the main strategies of the axis of resistance is to increase military power to confront threats that threaten the existence of this axis.
Strengthening the position of the Shiites, limiting the expansionism of the Zionist regime, and forming a new order in the West Asian region have been considered among the achievements of the members of this axis, including the Quds Force of Iran, Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Palestine, the Popular Mobilization Forces of Iraq, Hezbollah of Lebanon, and Ansarullah of Yemen. The forces of the Resistance Axis have established networks and news agencies such as Al-Manar Network, Al-Mayadeen Network, Al-Masirah Network, and Al-Furat Network to cover their activities and goals. The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting also produces and broadcasts numerous programs to cover the actions of this axis.
The term “Axis of Resistance” was first used in 2002 when US President George W. Bush called Iran, Iraq, and North Korea an “axis of evil,” and then-US Deputy Secretary of State John Bolton included Syria, Libya, and Cuba in this list.
In response, the Libyan magazine Al-Zuhf Al-Akhdar called the aforementioned countries not an axis of evil, but an axis of resistance that is opposed to the United States.
History: From the 6-Day War to the Fight Against ISIS
The concept of the Resistance Axis has been shaped in the context of historical events over the past few decades; the Israeli regime’s occupationist identity and its failure to adhere to the borders established in 1948 have caused Palestinians, including the Islamic resistance movement Hamas, to always view Israel with hostility and jeopardize its existence.
The 22-day Gaza War that took place in January 2008 is one example of the threat to Israel’s national security by Islamic resistance forces.
In addition, the Lebanese political-military organization Hezbollah, a Shiite group, succeeded in ending the Israeli regime’s 18-year military domination of parts of southern Lebanon in June 2000. The confrontation between Hezbollah and the Israeli regime continued in the 33-day war that lasted from late July 2006 to late August of that year.
This hostile relationship also existed between Syria and the Israeli regime, starting with the Six-Day War in January 1966, during which the Israeli regime occupied a large part of Syria known as the Golan Heights. Relations between Syria and the Israeli regime became more hostile after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, and especially with the presidency of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, and led to the formation of a closer alliance between Iran, Syria, Palestinian jihadist forces, and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The main factor in the formation of resistance
The Americans – both before Bush Sr. and during Bush Jr. – clearly announced through their president, secretary of state, and other officials that the Middle East, which was divided between France and England after the Sykes-Picot Agreement, needed to be revised.
The border lines that, if you look at the map now, are based on geographical longitude and latitude and have no relation to natural, linguistic, ethnic, or religious lines, are the product of that division. The borders of Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other countries are examples of these lines.
These straight lines, which were drawn based on an agreement between France and England to divide the conquered lands after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, have created countries in light of which Israel was formed under the British mandate in the land of Palestine. Israel first came to power by emigrating Jews from Europe and elsewhere, arming them, and providing them with opportunities, and finally by the sudden withdrawal of Britain from Palestine and leaving the land empty-handed. Jewish lobbies and their supporters expanded Israel through threats, massacres, and displacement. In this way, a territory called Occupied Palestine and an illegitimate regime were established as the State of Israel.
Initially, Israel, out of concern for its survival, focused on establishing its existence within the borders of Palestine and had no territorial claims against other countries such as Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan. This regime initially recognized the Arab areas in Palestine within the 1947 borders and later within the 1967 borders.
But with further conflicts with Arab countries and the betrayal of the British and Americans to the Arab countries, Israel achieved great victories and occupied territories: the Sinai Desert from Egypt, the West Bank from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Then, in the early 1980s, it occupied southern Lebanon and even advanced as far as Beirut. This set of lands taken from the neighboring countries of occupied Palestine made the Zionists think about expansionism and achieving their ultimate goal, which is the ownership of the land between the Nile and the Euphrates by the Jewish people.
This goal includes the lands of the Sinai Desert, east of the Nile River, Palestine, Jordan, eastern Iraq, southwestern Syria, and northern Arabia, which were claimed as the “promised land” of the Jews and whose sovereignty was designed in their plan.
The Zionists felt that an opportunity had arisen for them to rule over these lands. For this reason, we witnessed two parallel trends: on the one hand, the expansionism of the Zionists and the retreat of the neighboring regimes of occupied Palestine, and on the other hand, the formation of the resistance movement that determined the equations of the Middle East.
New Syrian Resistance
A group called the “Syrian Resistance in the Coastal Region” consisting of forces from Damascus, the coastline and other cities in the country issued a statement calling on the terrorists ruling Syria to stop their aggression against the citizens of the country.
The statement emphasized: We call on all relevant parties in Syria and outside the country to force the new rulers, including al-Julani, to stop the crimes of the elements under their command against different segments of Syrian society so that a bloodbath does not ensue.
We do not want to be accused of sedition and seek an independent Syria for all of its people.
Previously, Syrian Christians had expressed their anger at the aggression of the elements under al-Julani’s command.
Resistance is the only way to defeat the West Dawn
In the current climate, the re-arrangement of new regional orders based on ethnicity and religion is a priority. For example, in Syria, we are witnessing the territories dominated by the US-backed Kurds being drawn into conflict with Turkey.
The fertile and oil-rich areas north and east of the Euphrates are now in the hands of Kurdish forces, and the Syrian government does not allow entry to these areas even after the fall of ISIS. In southern Syria, in addition to the occupied Golan, in the part under Syrian control, the Druze movement has strengthened and even the idea of forming an independent state among them has been raised.
Similarly, the division of Alawite and Arab areas in Syria represents plans that effectively consider a united Syria to be over.
A similar plan has been implemented in Iraq; especially after the referendum on the partition of Iraq by the Kurds and the declaration of independence of Iraqi Kurdistan, the Zionist regime was the first government to recognize this independence.
These plans are not limited to Syria and Iraq; Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and even the Islamic Republic of Iran are also targeted for division and weakening in these plans. In Turkey, the separation of the Kurdish and Alawite regions will lead the country towards internal conflicts.
The countries of the region will also face similar crises, and these divisions will turn them into fragmented systems dependent on dominant global powers such as the United States, France, England, and the Zionist regime.
America’s interests will not be served
The ultimate goal of these plans is to maximize the interests of the United States and its allies in the region. The Southwest Asia region, commonly referred to as the Middle East, is considered one of the most strategic and economically vital regions, as its energy resources play a key role in meeting global economic needs.
Dominating these resources is one of the main priorities of the United States and the Zionist regime. Naturally, preventing the expansion of the influence of competitors of the global hegemony system, such as emerging powers such as China, India, Brazil and the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as traditional powers such as Russia, which are considered the main competitors of the West, is one of the important goals in strategic plans for this region. This issue is especially considered in plans that seek to dominate the region in the future.
Naturally, in all the lands where they sought to change their plans, resistance was born and strengthened. This issue of the expansion of resistance is a point that we must be aware of.
In Yemen, before the arrival of the Saudis and their aggression, which intended to twist the Yemeni scroll in a maximum of two weeks, Ansar Allah did not have this power.
Wherever the Americans set foot and wherever they attempted to dominate, the resistance coincidentally became stronger. Of course, the suffering, hardships and efforts of the fighters and mujahideen who made this happen, the effort they made for God and brought about divine victory, were undoubtedly effective in this regard.
But this is tradition. The reference made by the Highness the Amir that the collapse of the political system of the resistance circle in Syria and the rise to power of groups whose fate and future in Syria are currently unknown does not mean the end of the resistance.
Incidentally, the opportunity for a deeper and more effective formation of the resistance movement within Syria was provided, and perhaps the current movement in Syria, despite its many services to the resistance front, whether it was supporting and defending the Islamic Republic during the Holy Defense or supporting Palestinian and Lebanese resistance groups after the Holy Defense, these were services of the Syrian political system.
For this reason, the Islamic Republic considered it necessary to support this system, because the circle of resistance against the grand arrogant and colonial plan of the United States and the Zionists had to be preserved, and Syria was part of this circle. This has nothing to do with the type of relationship between the rulers of the political system and their people, whether they are democratic or partisan, whether they are Baathist or Islamist, whether they are democratic or not.
This country is in a circle of resistance that should lead to the expulsion of the Americans from the region and the elimination of the Zionist regime, and Syria is taking steps in this direction. This is the grand strategy of the Islamic Republic and has nothing to do with ideological convergence. Today, we consider supporting Palestine as our ideal.
So we support the resistance and the resistance will remain stable and strong. Maximum pressure will definitely lead to maximum resistance. In physics, you look at this. The intensity of resistance depends on the intensity of the blow that is delivered. This theory, with the faith we have in divine victory and strength and power, will definitely happen in the regional space as well.
